Jonathan Mill wrote a book called Wolves in the Wild . Chapter 2 , "The Howl of the Wolf , " is about wolf intelligence and communication . ' ! Read a section from this chapter . What is the connection between the howl of the wolf and the wolfs intelligence ? The Howl of the Wolf After watching wolves in the wild in northern Minnesota for six months , I believe that I can answer the question : "Are wolves intelligent ? " It seems that wolves use their howl in a very interesting way . Many people find the howl of the wolf frightening . They believe that wolves howl at the moon for no reason . It is true that wolves howl more on nights when the moon is very bright but they have a very good reason for their behavior . When the moon is bright , wolves see better . This helps them hunt more easily . They are probably more active then , so they howl more . However , they are not howling at the moon . The howl is a very important part of a wolfs life and the wolf needs it to survive . Each wolf pack has a different howl . A wolf hunts alone and often travels far from the rest of the pack to find food . When a pack hears the special howl of a pack-mate , the pack howls back . The wolf and the pack continue howling to each other until the wolf returns to the pack . A wolf has to be careful when it howls because another wolf pack may attack it when it is alone . My conclusion * is that wolves howl to communicate information . This shows that they behave in an intelligent way . In fact , wolves may be more intelligent than many people think .
