Booklet Page 48 : Choosing my Animal Cat Cats belong to the same family of animals as the lion , tiger and panther . Cats have lived with humans for thousands of years but they are very independent creatures . Chimpanzee Chimpanzees belong to the great ape family . They live in groups and cooperate with each other to hunt , gather food and take care of their young . Dog The dog is one of the most popular domestic animals in the world . For more than 12 , 000 years , dogs have lived with humans as companions . In fact , the dog is often called " man ' s best friend . " Dolphin Dolphins live in the sea but they are not fish . Dolphins are famous for their intelligence , playfulness and friendliness to man . Elephant Elephants are huge animals , known for their special appearance . They use their trunk in the same way we use our hands . Horse Humans and horses have a special relationship . The horse is both a partner and a friend . It has helped people in many ways - at work and at play . Lion The lion is a large and powerful member of the cat family and the second largest of the big cats ( the tiger is bigger ) . It is known as the "king of the beasts" or the "king of the jungle . " Parrot There are so many different kinds of parrots . Many of them have brightly colored feathers . They are unusual birds with special talents . Penguin Penguins are strange birds . They swim and dive but do not fly . Polar Bear The great white bear lives in the Artie North . It is a good swimmer and can usually be found in or near the water . It is usually shy but can be very dangerous ! Wolf The wolf is the largest member of the dog family . Wolves live in a family group called a pack . There are , of course , many other animals . Choose another animal if you want .
