They say that dolphins think because they communicate with people and with each other . they seem to make decisions . they can learn how to help people who work underwater . 1 Do you think these examples show that dolphins are intelligent ? Discuss why or why not . 2 Read the article from the magazine Teens and Animals . Find two examples showing that dolphins are intelligent . Answer on 70 . ^ ^ Scientists Report on Dolphin Intelligence * Scientists have found that dolphins work together as a group . This helps them to survive . For example , they cooperate to catch fish to eat . How do they do that ? Dolphins swim in groups . When they see some fish together , the dolphins make a circle around them . The dolphins make the circle smaller and smaller until the fish are trapped and can't get out of the circle . The fish move closer and closer to each other . The dolphins continue to make the circle smaller and smaller until all the fish are in a "ball . " In this way , they don't allow the fish to escape . One dolphin goes into the center of the circle , eats some fish and then goes back to the circle . Then , another dolphin goes into the center of the circle , eats and returns to the circle . The dolphins take turns doing this . One by one , they each go into the center of the circle and eat . Scientists think that the way dolphins work together to catch fish is an example of intelligent behavior * . Another example is the way dolphins help divers and other people who work underwater . Scientists have also found that dolphins communicate with each other using different kinds of sounds . When a dolphin is sick or hurt , it uses a special sound to call for help . The other dolphins hear this special sound . They help the sick dolphin get to the surface of the water . When the dolphin's head is above water , it can breathe air . The " call for help" saves the dolphin ' s life . Scientists believe that dolphins are very special animals because they can communicate and cooperate to solve a problem . They say this kind of behavior shows that dolphins are very intelligent . survive v . continue to live ; stay alive . * The article and activities are based on "Dolphins Are Very Intelligent" from Dolphins ( 1998 , pages 32-33 ) , published by CET in conjunction with The Israeli Curriculum Center , Ministry of Education and Culture . * behavior — the way a person or an animal acts or behaves .
