After the fall of the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980 s , the Jews were allowed to emigrate from Russia and Ukraine to other countries including Israel . In the 1990 s and at the beginning of the 21 st century , more than one million Jews immigrated to Israel from the Soviet Union . While the absorption of so many immigrants required enormous efforts and resources on the part of the State of Israel , the immigrants from the Soviet Union also contributed a great deal to the country . They stimulated the growth of the economy , contributed to the development of the sciences , industry and culture , and more generally , increased the number of Jews living in Israel .
