Example 4 : "We haven ' t seen you all week . " ( Direct Speech ) Laura remarked that they hadn't seen him the whole week . ( Reported Speech ) or Laura told Bryan that they hadn ' t seen him the whole week . Pronouns change to make clear who was involved in the situation . Example 5 : "What ' s the matter ? You sound kind of down ... like you're upset or something . " ( Direct Speech ) Laura wanted to know what the matter was . Then she added that Bryan sounded kind of down , like he was upset or something . ( Reported Speech ) or Laura asked Bryan what the matter was . Then she added that Bryan sounded upset . ? When more than one sentence is reported , you may need to add or remove words . Report the following parts of the dialogue . Use any appropriate reporting verb in the past . Answer in your notebook . & Laura says , "Well , that's a relief . Was there anyone else in the car with you ?" & Laura says , "I can ' t believe I didn ' t hear about this . How long will David have to stay in the hospital ?" c Laura says , "A week is a long time . Well , you've gone to visit him , right ?" fl Laura says , "But that's not your fault . I mean , things like that can happen when it rains at night . " B Laura says , "If it were me lying in the hospital , I might be upset about being hurt .
