Link To Language : Direct and Reported Speech The dialogue you completed on page 29 is in direct speech . In order to relate the main points of a conversation , reported speech is used . The reporting verbs ( e . g . said , asked , believed , thought ) convey the voice or tone of a person's statement . Example 1 : "I think his parents blame me for the accident . " ( Direct Speech ) He believed that David ' s parents blamed him for the accident . ( Reported Speech ) The tense of the verb changes : blame ^ blamed Present Simple ? = > Past Simple Other tense changes : Past Simple , Present Perfect ^ Past Perfect Modals in the Present ( can , will , must ) ? = > Modals in the Past ( could . would , had to ) Example 2 : "Why don ' t you feel like it ? " asked Laura . ( Direct Speech ) Laura asked Bryan why he didn't feel like it . ( Reported Speech ) _ Questions are reported using the word order of a statement . Example 3 : "Look , do you want me to take you to the hospital now ? " Laura asked . ( Direct Speech ) Laura asked Bryan whether he wanted Laura to take him to the hospital then .
