Talking of Laughter Read the following definitions of different ways that people laugh . How would you be most likely to laugh in each of the situations described below ? Discuss with a partner . If you disagree , try to reach agreement . giggle v . to laugh nervously , in a silly way . guffaw v . to give a loud , noisy laugh . chuckle v . to laugh quietly or to oneself , showing that one is satisfied or amused . snigger v . to laugh in a low , unpleasant way , often at another person's problems . shriek ( with laughter ) v . to laugh in a high-pitched voice , often causing tears . You hear that someone you dislike lost in a competition . You are telling a friend about something embarrassing that happened to you . You are reading an amusing article in the newspaper . You are listening toa joke with a group of friends . You hear about something extremely funny that happened . Example : You hear that someone you dislike lost in a comp etition —sniqqer Laughter is often said to be "contagious" or "infectious . " These are words that we usually use to describe how an illness spreads quickly from one person to the next and becomes an epidemic . In the case of laughter , we use these words to explain how if one person starts to laugh , other people almost always join in and start laughing too . Listen and Laugh 1 Listen to a recording of different laughs and answer in your notebook . For each laugh : ? Describe the laugh according to the definitions above . ? Explain who is laughing in your opinion . ? Explain why the person may be laughing . 2 Did the recording make you or others laugh ? If so , what do you think made the laughter contagious or infectious ? Discuss .
