Link to Language : Descriptions The person who writes a cartoon or comic does not always draw it . He or she comes up with an idea , writes it down and sends וז to ^/ 7 illustrator . The writer must write a description of the picture and the dialogue . This is called a panel description . 1 Compare the following cartoon with the panel description . Would the panel description give an illustrator a clear idea of what to draw ? Discuss . Panel Description The scene takes place in a psychiatrist's office . In the office , we see a psychiatrist ' s couch and an armchair . There is a single picture on the wall and a small lamp on a side table . Dr . John Flack , a 45 -year-old psychiatrist , is sitting in his armchair in the office , holding a pen and paper . Dr . Flack is wearing a white jacket , a tie and glasses . A teenage boy is lying on the couch . He is talking anxiously , clasping his hands together . Dr . Flack is listening intently to what the boy has to say and taking notes . 2 Find two examples of each of the following elements in the panel description . ? Present Progressive ? adjectives ? adverbs > ' Why do you think that a panel description makes use of these elements ? 4 Make adverbs from the following adjectives . Use your dictionary to help you . Then write sentences using five of the adverbs . Answer in your notebook . angry anxious beautiful careful dangerous firm gentle good happy joyful nervous pleasant secure serious shy tight ungrateful 5 In your notebook , write a panel description for the cartoon on page 19 . Use the Present Progressive where suitable and include adjectives and adverbs in your description . To make adverbs from adjectives , add -ly to the adjective . 1 . Words ending in -y : y- > i + -ly ( exception : shy ) 2 . Words ending in le : Remove -e , then add -ly . 3 . Exceptions : good— well ; hard— hard ; fast— fast "I love my father , but he ' s difficult to talk to . By the way , are you going to bill me full price for this session , Dad ?"
