Booklet Page 47 : More Practice Read the following case study and circle the correct form of the verb . The Case of the Man Who Slept and Forgot Mr . Barnes , a 69-year-old man , lived alone . One afternoon in September , 1998 , Mr . Barnes woke up / had woken up / was waking up from a nap with absolutely no idea what day or week it was . He simply could not remember a thing that occurred / had occurred / had been occurring in the last three years and was / has been / had been surprised when he saw the date on the newspaper lying next to him . Mr . Barnes felt / was feeling / had f elt confused and alarmed , so he called a close friend and neighbor whom he knew / had 5 known / had been known for years . Mr . Barnes ' s friend told / had told / had been telling him that he should see a doctor right away and offered to take him to the hospital . A neurologist examined / hadexamined / had been examining him thoroughly and ordered a brain scan . Once he had the results , Mr . Barnes ' s doctor told him that he suff ered / had suff ered / had been suffering a small stroke in the brain which caused / had caused / had been causing his amnesia - a permanent loss of memory . In fact , the test results showed that Mr . Barnes experienced / had experienced / HI had been experiencing a series of tiny , undetectable strokes over the past six months . Unfortunately , Mr . Barnes couldn ' t tell the doctor anything about those six months . However , his friend and neighbor described how Mr . Barnes acted / had acted / had been I ! acting strange and forgetful during the last few months . For example , a month earlier , when they chatted / had chatted / had been chatting about a fishing trip , Mr . Barnes was ונ unable / had been unable / was being unable to remember where they had gone and what 13 they had caught . For the neurologist , this seemed to prove that his diagnosis of amnesia was correct : it was due to a stroke .
