Who ' s the Best Female Musician ? 1 Rock TEEVEE asked viewers to choose the best female musician of all times . Read the following transcript of an interview from their discussion show and find out why Shirley Castle chose Madonna . Shirley Chooses Madonna Interviewer ( I ) : Shirley , please tell us , why did you choose Madonna as the best female musician of all times ? Shirley ( S ) : I like a lot of female musicians , but I really think that Madonna is special . I : How is she special ? S : Well , without any help from her parents or anyone else , she managed to become a great dancer and singer and the star that she is today , I : What was her childhood like ? Why didn't her parents help her ? S : They weren't able to . Madonna's mother died when she was very young . So Madonna spent most of her teenage years being " mother" to her younger brothers and sisters . I : I see . But her life became much easier when she moved to New York , right ? S : Oh , no . It was very hard for her . That's why I admire her so much . She wanted to be a dancer , but had to work as a waitress . At one point she played drums with a band called The Breakfast Club . Eventually , they gave her a chance to sing . I : Who is The Breakfast Club ? I've never heard of them . S : Nor had I . But at one of their performances the president of Sire Records heard her sing and had her make a demo tape . That tape became her first album , Madonna . I : When was that album released ? S : In 1983 . I : That's a long time ago . Why do you think she is still so popular today ? S : Madonna never stays the same . She ' s always changing — her looks , her style , the topics of her songs . People don't get bored with Madonna because they never know what she's going to do next . I : I still don't understand . Why do you think that makes her the best female musician ? S : Madonna has a powerful voice ; she writes and sings amazing songs ; and she ' s a terrific dancer . She's also smart . She doesn't just sing pretty songs ; she sings songs that shake people up and make them think a little bit . There aren't many other female artists out there doing that . I : Which is your favorite Madonna song ? S : I like a lot of them . I guess my favorite is "Holiday . " It's a great dance song . I : A lot of people say that Madonna is anti-feminist , that she does things that harm the image of women and what women can achieve . What do you think about that ? S : Oh , I disagree . I think it ' s just the opposite . Madonna has opened doors for women and has shown that women can achieve anything — fame , fortune and motherhood . I : You have certainly made your point . Where did you learn so much about Madonna ? S : I've been a member of her fan club for five years and I regularly look at her web site .
