Here and There , Then and Now Section Task : stepping Out Writing a dictionary and an encyclopedia entry In this section you will learn about fashions from different times and places . You will write a dictionary definition and part of an encyclopedia entry for an item of clothing or accessory that has an unusual or interesting cultural origin . From Head to Toe Q Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe is a shop selling unusual and even strange items . Some of the special items are presented in display cases . Each display includes the item and a card with information about it . Read the cards and decide which item in the display case each card describes . Often people use the phrase "mad as a hatter" to describe 1 someone who is crazy . During the 17 and 1 8 " centuries , when hats were very popular , hat makers or "hatters" as they were called , worked with poisonous materials . These materials poisoned the hat makers and made them ill . The symptoms of the illness included speech problems , shaking , memory loss and even personality changes . Today when you think of gloves , you think of protection— sport or work . In the past , gloves were worn as a fashionable accessory with formal evening clothes . Long gloves , which often covered the elbow , were first worn by the French musketeers , soldiers who carried a rifle called a musket . In the Middle Ages , the glove sometimes had a symbolic meaning to knights . You probably think that running shoes are a modern invention . The first rubber soled shoes were sold in the United States in the late 1800 s . In 1913 , the rubber company wanted to choose a name for these shoes . In the end , the company chose the name Keds and they were first marketed as "sneakers" in 1917 . Henry McKinney made up the name because the rubber sole made the shoe quiet .
