Have them • draw or stick a picture of themselves in the space provided . o Important concept : Teach students about capitalizing the first letter of their name and the name of their town / city . Also, remind students about left→right directionality . Phonics New phonics concept : Magic ‘e’ with long ‘a’ and long ‘o’ When the letter ‘e’ appears at the end of the word, it is called Magic ‘ E’ . Magic ‘ E’ makes the vowel before it sound like its name , creating the long vowel sound . For example, it makes the vowel ‘a’ sound like the letter ‘a’ and the vowel ‘o’ sound like the letter ‘o’ . Review : Begin by reviewing the five vowels with students : ‘a’ as in ‘alligator’ , ‘e’ as in ‘elephant’, ‘i ’ as in ‘iguana’ , ‘o ’ as in ‘octopus , and ‘u ’ as in ‘umbrella’, emphasizing the short vowel sounds . Use the arrangement on the righthand side of the review box to show how the vowels ( a, e, i, o, u ) create the shape of a face . This is a creative mnemonic tool to help learners remember them easily . In this design, "o" represents the face, "a" and "e" serve as eyes, "i" as the nose, and "u" as the mouth . Refer to the Review box at the top of pg . 30 in the Student Book . Activity Extension : Students imagine they’re going to a summer camp and want to communicate with the other campers .
