Phonics Student Book ( Pages 182 - 184 ) New phonics concept : ‘Y’ = l ong ‘e’ ( as in “happy” ) and ‘y’ = long ‘i’ ( as in "sky" ) When the letter "y" appears at the end of a word, it acts as a vowel, creating two distinct sounds : in some cases, it sounds like a long / ī / as in "sky" and "try . " In other cases, it sounds like a long / ē / as in "happy" and "cherry . " Review previous words : Begin by reviewing words with the letter ‘y’ that students have already encountered , such as “yellow” and "yo - yo,” emphasizing the ‘y’ sound . Refer to the Reminder box at the top of pg . 182 . Whole Class Digital Instruction : Remember and Learn Tabs For detailed instructions and extension ideas, see “Tips” in the Digital Learning Environment . * Pg . 182 , Exercise 1 : Listen . Point out the word family of each box and the ‘y’ ending in each example word . • Read the list of words to the students or play the audio, emphasizing two different • vowel sounds of the letter ‘y’ . Read the words together with the students chorally . • Have students practice reading the words silently . • Invite individual students to read a word aloud . • Pg . 182 , Exercise 2 : Listen and write . Have students listen carefully to each word in the audio and focus on the sound of the • "y" at the end of each word . Have students write 1" " in the circle if the "y" sounds like in happy ( short / ē / sound ) . • Have students write 2" " in the circle if the "y" sounds like in sky ( long / ī / sound ) . • Teaching Suggestions : Introduce the / y / sounds by contrasting the long ‘i’ sound ( as in "sky" and "try" ) with • the long ‘e’ sound ( as in "happy" and "cherry" ) . Emphasize that the position of ‘y’ at the end of the word determines the vowel sound . Use visuals, such as a picture of the sky and a party, to reinforce the two sounds . • Encourage students to find other words with the ‘y’ ending in their environment or in • reading materials, practicing both sounds . Use hand motions, where students stretch their hands up for the long ‘i’ sound and • bring them close together for the long ‘e’ sound, to reinforce the different sounds . My Way, Teacher's Guide 221
