Phonics New phonics concept : The sound of long ‘o’  / oʊ / Review : Begin by reviewing the concept of magic ‘e’ with words students have already encountered, such as "home," "stone," and "cold . " Refer to the Review box at the top of pg . 66 in the Student Book . Ask them how the long "o" sound is spelled in these words, highlighting the use of ‘o’ + magic ‘e’ . Read the list of words to the students, emphasizing the long ‘o’ sound, or play the audio . ● Teach students the long ‘o’ spelling patterns as shown in each column : ● The magic ‘e’ spelling _o_e ( green ) , which they already know . ○ The ‘oa’ spelling ( red ) . Appears in the middle of a word . ○ The ‘ow’ spelling ( blue ) . Appears at the end of a word . ○ Have students repeat the words after you, focusing on the long ‘o’ sound . ● Read the words together with the students chorally . ● At this point, students don't need to know the meanings of these words ; they should ● focus on the long ‘o’ sound . Read the list of words to the students, emphasizing the long ‘o’ sound, or play the audio . ● Read the words with students chorally . ● Have students practice reading silently . ● Invite individual students to read a word . ● Explain : ● The ‘o’ and ‘a’ in "boat" / bo ʊ t / , "coat" / ko ʊ t / , "road" / ro ʊ d / , and "goal" / ɡoʊl / ○ makes the long ‘o’ sound . The ‘o’ and ‘w’ in "snow" / sno ʊ / , "row" / ro ʊ / , "window" / ˈwɪndoʊ / , and ○ Teaching Suggestions : Explain that the long "o" sound can be spelled in various ways, such as "oa" in "boat," • "ow" in "snow," and "o" + magic "e" in "rope . " Encourage students to identify these patterns in new words and build their own examples .
