Introduction Energy causes everything to move and things to happen . Without energy , there would be no movement and no life . Nothing would happen . Everything is connected , in one way or another , to energy . Energy is what causes things to happen in our immediate environment , on Earth , and in outer space . In our immediate environment , the devices we use every day – such as our cell phones , computers , cars , and washing machines – need energy in order to work . Our bodies need energy to live and engage in our daily activities . The plants , trees and animals in our backyards and neighborhoods need energy to live , survive and reproduce . On Earth , giant sea waves crash and wash up on beach . Lightning flashes across the sky . A volcano erupts . Our Sun scatters light everywhere , in all directions . These and other natural phenomena are connected to the generation and release of energy . Energy is alos menifested in the vaster scales of the universe . The Sun has been generating a huge amount of energy every second – for billions of years – and it will continue to generate energy for billions of years to come . Many other stars – billions of them – radiate light in all directions , releasing a great deal of energy that they produce themselves . Planets , meteorites , galaxies and other objects move in space . Their movements involve energy . Understanding energy – identifying its different types and its different sources , and knowing how energy can be transformed from one type to another – can help us solve many of today’s environmental problems . For example , more and more people are using energy from the Sun to generate electricity . This is one of many ways we can deal with the energy crisis , environmental pollution , and global warming .
