SPELLING RULES FOR PRESENT PROGRESSIVE When adding ing to the base form of the verb , note the following spelling rules : 1 In verbs that end with e , we drop the final e before adding ing take › taking 2 In one-syllable verbs that end with consonant-vowel-consonant , we double the final consonant before adding ing shop › shopping Exception : The letters w , x and y are never doubled blow › blowing fix › fixing pay › paying 3 In verbs of more than one syllable which end with consonant-vowel-consonant , we double the final consonant only when the last syllable is stressed begin › beginning If the stress is not on the last syllable , we do not double the final consonant visit › visiting 4 In verbs that end with ie , we change the ie to y before adding ing die › dying SPELLING RULES FOR ADVERBS 1 When an adjective ends in y , we change the y to i before adding ly happy › happily 2 When an adjective ends in a consonant + le , we usually drop the e before adding ly : terrible › terribly 3 When an adjective ends in ic , we usually add ally : tragic › tragically 4 When an adjective ends in ll , we add y : full › fully Exceptions : Adjectives Adverbs good › well hard › hard fast › fast straight › straight early › early late › late
