עמוד:125

“ As Envisioned by the Prophets of Israel ” The British ruled in Israel until the establishment of the State of Israel . The United Nations announced that the British would leave on May 15 , 1948 . On May 14 , the leaders of the Jewish settlements declared the establishment of the State of Israel . On this public occasion , David Ben Gurion ( soon to become Israel’s first prime minister ) read the Declaration of Independence . In the Declaration of Independence , the leaders of the Jewish people formulated the guiding principles of the new state . The State of Israel will be open for the immigration of Jews and for the ingathering of the exiles from all countries of their dispersion ; it will promote the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants ; it will be based on the precepts of liberty , justice and peace as envisioned by the prophets of Israel ; it will uphold the full social and political equality of all its citizens , without distinction of race , creed or sex ; it will guarantee full freedom of conscience , worship , education and culture ; it will safeguard the sanctity and inviolability of the shrines and Holy Places of all religions ; and it will dedicate itself to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations . ( From the Declaration of Independence , 1948 ) What does “ as envisioned by the Prophets of Israel” mean ? The State of Israel was to be founded on traditional Jewish values . These principles for the building of a just society are found in the Bible , especially in the books of the Prophets . The establishment of the State of Israel gave the opportunity to create a society based on these principles .
