A sovereign state is an independent state that establishes its own laws . A Tour of the Knesset * ( The Israeli Parliament ) Hadas and Jonathan went to visit the Knesset with Hadas’s uncle , Aaron , who is a member of the Knesset and agreed to take them on a tour of the building . “ There he is , the man in the grey suit waving to us . ” “ Hadas , I’m so glad you came ! This must be your famous friend from the United States . What’s your name ?” “ Jonathan – I’m not as famous as you are ! It’s very nice to meet you !” “ So , where do we begin ? What would you like to see ? ” asked Uncle Aaron . “ Everything , ” said Hadas . “ Your office , the chamber , the Prime Minister ... ” “ Well , I can’t promise you the Prime Minister , but we can start with my office . ” On the way to Uncle Aaron’s office , he was stopped by two members of the Knesset who wanted to talk to him . He tried to explain to them that he was busy , but they insisted that the matter they wanted to discuss with him was very important . Aaron suggested that Hadas and Jonathan sit on a bench in the corridor and wait until he finished speaking with them . Hadas and Jonathan couldn’t hear the conversation , but it was clearly a very heated discussion . Aaron raised his voice a few times . After a few minutes , Hadas’s uncle rejoined them and apologized for the interruption . “ What was that about , Uncle Aaron ? You seem very upset . Is everything all right ?” “ No , everything is certainly not all right , but let’s not talk about it . I don’t want to spoil your visit . I’ll deal with the problem later . ” “ It won’t spoil our visit . We’re really interested in knowing what your work involves , ” said Jonathan . “ Real issues are what interest us the most . That is , if you don’t mind ... ” “ This really interests you ?” “ Yes ! ” Hadas and Jonathan replied at once . In Hebrew knesset means assembly and The Knesset is the Israeli Parliament . The Knesset was named after the Knesset HaGedola ( the Great Assembly ) which was the institution that governed the Jewish people during the period of the second Temple more than 2 , 000 years ago . The modern Knesset is composed of 120 members , just like the Great Assembly . What message do you think the founders of the State of Israel wanted to convey by calling the Knesset by this name ?
