In the 1930 s , two American teenagers , Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster , created the Superman character for a comic strip in their high school newspaper . Their comic strip character was different from the usual characters that were published in newspapers at the time . Siegel and Shuster created a hero who had a dual * personality . In his everyday life , the character was the quiet , polite Clark Kent , who was a reporter for the newspaper , The Daily Planet . However , at the first sign of disaster or crime , Kent turned into Superman . He became a superhero who wore a red cape and blue tights . He used his special powers to save people and fight crime . Siegel and Shuster tried to sell their superhero to national newspapers . However , the newspaper editors were not interested . Most editors thought that the Superman character was too incredible . Finally , in 1937 , a publisher called DC Comics bought their comic strip and published it .
