On the Job 1 Three journalists were interviewed about their work . Read their answers to three of the questions below . Which of the questions were they asked ? Do you make the decisions ? g Is the job ofa journalist the same in all media ? Journalist 1 : Well , this is how it happened . I was working as DJ at a local radio station . I interviewed a lot of local musicians for my program . At one point , I realized that I preferred talking to the people to just playing the music , so I began writing for the city paper . Journalist 2 : I first started writing for my school paper . I covered sports and special events . At the time , I really didn't think I would be a reporter . Journalist 3 : I guess I just sort of fell into it . My first job was working on a local newspaper . I was a junior reporter . Then I heard about a training program for young journalists . To my amazement , I was accepted . Senior journalists trained me and taught me the basic skills of being a reporter . B Journalist 1 : As in all media , not only newspapers , the owners decide on the general policy but they don ' t tell us what to do on a day-to-day basis . Journalist 2 : The owners of the paper want to influence public opinion so they are the ones who decide . The editorsand journalists know what the paper ' s general policy is but they try to report events as objectively as possible . Journalist 3 : Every newspaper has a general line . The owners of the newspaper usually decide this . When there are disagreements between owners and editors , the editors are sometimes able to influence general policy . Journalist 1 : 1 would advise them to work for a school newspaper or radio station . During the summer vacation , they can join a volunteer program at newspapers and TV and radio stations . This will help them understand the job . Journalist 2 : The best way to learn is by doing it . Rather than just studying j ournalism at school , get out there and do it as much as you can . Journalist 3 : Read as much as you can . Figure out which journalists you like and try to study why those writers are effective .
