Link to Language : Using a Dictionary When using a dictionary to find the meaning of a word or an expression , it is important the to consider the definition in context . Two important dictionary skills ^\^ explained in context of the article "The Culturally Aware Traveler . " Dictionary Skill 1 : Finding the right definition To choose the correct definition of a word in the dictionary , pay attention to : ? the part of speech of the word : noun , verb , adjective , adverb ? the context in which the word is used . Example : " ... but I couldn't understand their initial reaction . " ( paragraph 1 ) Answer in your notebook . What meaning ( s ) do you know for the word "initial" ? If you are not sure about the meaning of the word : ? try to work out what it means in the example sentence above by paying attention to the context ; ? verify its meaning in activities 2 and 3 . 2 What part of speech is "initial" in the text ? 3 Look at the dictionary entry for "initial . " & How many meanings are given for the word ? & Which definition best suits the way the word is used in the text ? 4 Use a dictionary to find the following words and choose the meaning that best suits the part of speech and context of each word as it is used in the article . List the word with its part of speech and definition . Dictionary Skill 2 : Finding definitions of idiomatic expressions Idiomatic expressions contain words that take on a special meaning when used together . To find an idiom or idiomatic expression in the dictionary : ? Look up the main words of the idiom . This may be the first word of the expression , or a verb or noun in the expression . ? Scan the entry until you find the idiomatic expression . Idiomatic expressions may be marked with the word Idiom or the abbreviation IDM . Example : " .. . words are taken seriously and a person is taken at his word . . .
