Weekly Review : Into Thin Air In the spring of 1996 , Outside Magazine offered writer , Jon Krakauer , an assignment to report on expensive guided trips that guaranteed that any person in reasonable physical shape could make it to the world ' s highest peak - Mt . Everest . Although Krakauer was an experienced climber , he had little high altitude training . Despite this handicap , he gladly accepted the offer . He joined a commercial expedition team and was surprised to see so many expeditions climb at the same time - Mt . Everest was literally crawling with climbers of varying skills and experience . On May 10 , 1996 , when Krakauer reached the summit of Mt . Everest , located at an altitude of 29 , 028 feet , he hadn ' t slept in 57 hours , was suffering from severe altitude sickness symptoms and was running out of oxygen in his tank . As he started to make his descent he saw the first signs of an approaching storm , which eventually claimed the lives of eight climbers , including two of the guides . In writing his story , Krakauer reconsiders what went wrong . He points out the great number of climbers on the mountain . All those climbers created traffic jams near the summit , and resulted in cautious expert climbers wasting vital energy trying to help exhausted amateurs get back down to safety . Into Thin Air is the personal story of a survivor of a tragic mountain disaster . This firsthand account explores the questions of ambition , responsibility and guilt .
