Making Contact Section Task : Setting Sail ... Writing a set of instructions In this section , you will read about communication at sej . You will assess the means of communication you use . You will then choose one means of communication and write a set of user's instructions . To Be at Sea The expression " to be at sea" has come down to us after years of sea travel and exploration . It is used to describe a feeling of not knowing what to do 0 \ which direction to take . 1 Why do you think that the expression "to be at sea" reflects such feelings ? 2 One way of finding the direction to take is by using an instrument such as a compass . Follow the instructions to make your own water compass . Materials ? a small paper clip , straightened ? a small piece of styrofoam ? a bowl of water ? a small magnet ? a pennanent marker Instructions G Rub the paper clip with the magnet for several minutes . This will make the clip function like a magnet . © Push the paper clip through the styrofoam to make the needle ofthe compass , W Place the needle on the surface of the water . The needle will align itself along the magnetic field of the earth . It will then point north . 0 Blow the needle gently to move it . The needle should return to the same position . 3 In groups , suggest ways of testing your compass . Then try one of them .
