Ferdinand Magellan Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to sail across the Pacific Ocean . He discovered a route to make a complete circle around the world by sailing from Europe in a westward direction . He wanted to reach the Moluccas ( the Spice Islands ) in Southeast Asia , where many spices grew . The King of Spain paid for the voyage because he wanted the Moluccas to belong to Spain . Magellan left Spain with a fleet of five ships and a crew of 277 men . Magellan did not finish his famous voyage . He was killed on the Island of Mactan in the Philippines in 1521 . 1 Look at this 16 " century map of the world . Using this map and the modern map on page 12 , work out the route that Magellan may have taken to reach the Moluccas .
