The Classic American flame 1 Just about everyone has played Monopol but most people don't know that it has an interesting and unusual history . In the early 1900 s , landlords owned houses , buildings and other property . "The Landlord's Game" was invented to teach people about differences between rich and poor and to show the problems of capitalism . The inventors believed that many of the social problems in the United States were caused by too many wealthy landlords . They hoped that the people who played their game would understand this and be convinced of their belief . However , people just liked the game and did not care about its message . Within a few years , different versions of the game ( with different names ) appeared across the USA . "The Landlord's Game " was invented ... to show the problems of capitalism In 1933 , an unemployed salesman and inventor , Charles Darrow , began making and selling the game . Charles Darrow decided to use a version with street names from Atlantic City , New Jersey , a popular vacation city . Darrow asked Parker Brothers , a game manufacturer , to buy the game from him . It ' s hard to believe that they didn't think the game would sell and that they turned him down . However , a few years later , Parker Brothers changed their minds and bought the game from him . It became an instant success and Charles Darrow became the world's first millionaire game designer . Monopoly made the dream into a reality How did success happen so quickly ? During the Great Depression * the dream of getting rich quickly was especially exciting . Many of the very wealthy people had made their fortunes from buying and selling property . Monopoly made the dream into a reality for people — even if it was only in a game . For over 50 years , Monopoly has been played all over the world . Each country has its own version ( the names of the properties are local ) . However , historians of games consider Monopoly to be the classic American game . * Great Depression —a time ( 1929-1939 ) when there were serious economic problems all over the world and many people did not have jobs .
