The E ncyclopedia of Games CHESS , a game for two players played on a square board with 64 square spaces , alternately dark and light in color . Introduction The pieces are : two castles ( or rooks ) in the corner squares ; two knights in the next squares ; two bishops next to the knights ; the queen on her own color on the next square , and the king on the square next to her ; one pawn sits in a square in front of each of these pieces . Each piece moves according to rules and is taken off the board when an opposing piece moves into its square . The aim in chess is to trap , or checkmate , the opponent's king . "Checkmate" comes from two Persian words : shah ( king ) and mat ( unable to escape ; helpless ) . History Ancient History Chess has been played for centuries in all parts of the world .
