When someone else reports what was said , we call it reported speech . ? The reporting verb is usually in the Past Simple because the report usually refers to something that happened in the past . ? The verb in the reported sentence is usually one tense further in the past than in direct speech . Example : Mike said , "I am preparing a treasure hunt for my sister ' s birthday . " Mike said that he was preparing a treasure hunt for his sister's birthday . Note : When the report is close to the time of speaking , the reporting verb and the verb in the reported sentence do not change .
