jjj / Link to Language : Adjectives Adjectives are words that describe a noun . Example : Brazilians sing and dance to loud , rhythmic music . Adjectives can be used for comparison . \ Comparatives If a person , thing , or idea is more or less than another , we use : 1 . adjective + er ( + than ) if the adjective has one syllable . Example : The last piece played at the jazz concert was longer than the previous one . 2 . more / less + adjective j + than ) with most adjectives that have two syllables . Examples : Do you think Christina Aguilera is more famous than Madonna ? The concert hall was less crowded this week than last week . But : Adjectives that have two syllables and end in er , y , or ow take er ( + than ) . Examples : cleverer , happier , narrower 3 . more / less + adjective ( + than ) if the adjective has three or more syllables . Example : Rap music is more popular with teenagers today than rock music . \ Superlatives If a person , thing , or idea is more or less than all others , we use : 1 . adjective + est if the adjective has one syllable . Example : The lead singer had the loudest voice in the band . 2 . the most / least + adjective with most adjectives that have two syllables . Example : This has been the most tiring day I can remember in a long time — all I want to do now is sit back and relax to some classical music . But : Adjectives that have two syllables and end in er , y or ow take est . Examples : the cleverest , the happiest , the narrowest 3 . the most / least + adjective if the adjective has three or more syllables . Example : I listen to jazz , classical and pop music . Although they are all relaxing forms of music , classical music is the most relaxing of all . Remember some irregulars : good > better > best ? bad > worse > worst
