According to city engineers , the community will have cheaper electrical power , more water for fanning , less flooding in low areas and a new lake . The project will take about five years to complete and will provide employment for many people in the area . Officials also say the recreational areas near the new lake will attract tourists . ( December 18 , 1998 ) Local environmentalists protested at the Red Rock River Dam yesterday , claiming that the public is not aware of all the consequences of the project . Their report showed a decline in the quality of drinking water as well as a reduction in wildlife in the area . The creation of Red Rock Lake , behind the dam , flooded 10 square kilometers , causing the destruction of forestland . ( April 2 , 2003 ) EcoPlans chainnan , Henry Davis , commented on the proposed restoration project near the Red Rock River Dam . Davis explained that such projects help preserve and restore ecosystems and prevent further damage . He pointed out that the area could not be restored to the way it had been . He also emphasized how the environment is interconnected , quoting the famous environmentalist , John Muir , "When we try to pick out anything by itself , we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe .
