Fluency Development Fluency means reading with enough accuracy and automaticity to stay focused on meaning rather than on decoding individual words . As learners develop automaticity, they come to recognize common words and patterns more quickly and with less effort—freeing attention for comprehension ( e . g . , noticing key information, integrating ideas across sentences, and responding to what they read ) . My Way’s Approach to Fluency Reading instruction in the My Way series is grounded in the SELA ( Stepping - stones to English Literacy Acquisition ) developmental model ( Russak, 2019 ) , which describes reading development as a progression from reliance on visual cues, to phonetic decoding, to effortful—and eventually more automatic—reading . Grade Curriculum Level Reading Focus SELA Stages Grade 3 Pre - foundation Learning letters and reading simple sentences Visual Cue → Phonetic Cue Grade 4 Foundation Learning more complex phonics and spelling patterns and reading short texts Phonetic Cue → Effortful Grade 5 Foundation Consolidating foundations through fluency practice, with preparation routines that promote automatization and comprehension Phonetic Cue → Effortful bridge toward Effortful ( Automatic ) → Building on the strong phonics foundation established in grade four, the focus in grade five shifts from “learning to read,” to “reading to learn . ” Students advance to reading about familiar and relevant topics such as social responsibility, innovation, and friendship . This progression reflects the Israeli Ministry of Education’s English Curriculum 2020 and CEFR A1 goals, which emphasize communication, comprehension, and growing independence . Recommendations for Fluency Practice : The preparation stage shapes the reading stage’s success . Before students read a new text, build quick routines that remove decoding barriers and make it possible to focus on meaning . Pre - reading suggestions First scan ( words ) : Have students skim the text for target vocabulary and make sure • they remember the meanings of all the words . Get them into the habit of referring to the glosses below the text or the My Way Word List at the end of the Student Book to check or confirm meaning . Display the text and review any new or familiar grammar structures . • Second scan ( sentences ) : Have students read sentences containing target vocabulary • to check they understand the meaning in context .
