Enrichment A Demonstration Experiment Colorful flames Purpose to introduce the typical colors of a flame when adding the salts of different alkali metals to it . Protective gear : safety goggles . Equipment : Bunsen burner , 3 fusion spoons , salts of the alkali metals lithium chloride , sodium chloride ( table salt ) and potassium chloride . The experiment : A . Put on the safety goggles and light the Bunsen burner . B . Load a little potassium chloride into a fusion spoon , and place it at the center of burner flame . C . What color did the flame change to ? D . Repeat the activity with lithium chloride and sodium chloride . Activity Interactive Periodic Table Studying the properties of elements in the periodic table In the periodic table , choose one of the following groups : the alkali metals group , the halogens group or the noble gases group . Read the information about the group you have chosen , determine their states at room temperature and determine whether they belong to the metals group or to the nonmetals group . 1 .
