C Read the article . What was the invention ? How did it happen ? In Honor of the President Do you know who invented the first teddy bear , and how and when it got its name ? In America , the teddy bear got its start with a cartoon drawn by Clifford Berryman . The cartoon showed President Theodore ( Teddy ) Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby bear . According to this story , the president had gone to Mississippi to settle a disagreement 5 over the state border with Louisiana . His hosts , who knew that the president liked to hunt , decided to take him on a hunting trip . However , several days went by , and the hunters , including the president , had no luck . One of the members of the group , who felt bad that the president had not had any success in hunting , decided to do 10 something about it . He caught a baby bear and invited Roosevelt to shoot it . To their surprise , Roosevelt refused to kill the helpless cub , and the baby bear was set free . 15 To show what had happened , Berryman , a cartoonist for the Washington Post , drew a cartoon of the incident and gave it the caption , “ Drawing the Line” . The 20 cartoon played on the two meanings of “ drawing the line” : The first is the president actually deciding on a border between the two states ; the second is his refusal 25 to do something he believed to be wrong , that is , shooting a helpless animal . The cartoon appeared in the Washington Post on November 16 , 1902 and caused an immediate sensation . Americans were impressed by the president’s sensitivity . Morris and Rose Michtom , who owned a shop in New York , decided to create a toy bear in 30 honor of the president’s actions . Rose Michtom made a stuffed bear , and Morris Michtom wrote to President Roosevelt to ask for permission to call it “ Teddy’s Bear” in honor of the president . The president agreed , and so the teddy bear was invented . The Michtoms placed it in the window of their store . Instead of looking fierce and standing on four paws , the Michtoms’ bear looked sweet , like the bear in Berryman’s cartoon . 35 The teddy bear was such a hit that the Michtoms began producing them in large numbers . The teddy bear craze spread rapidly throughout the United States and Europe . In 1907 , President Roosevelt used it as a mascot for the elections . Society ladies carried their teddy bears everywhere , and children had their pictures taken with their favorite toy . 40 More than 100 years later , the teddy bear remains one of the world’s favorite toys . 1 mascot a person , animal or thing that is thought to bring good luck
