Inventions for Fun READING MATTERS A Many important inventions took years of planning . Others have come about almost by accident . Read these accounts of famous inventions and decide which are true . By Chance ? 1 Earle Dickson invented a new kind of bandage for his wife , who was always cutting herself in the kitchen . His bandage , made of gauze and tape , became the plaster . 2 One cold night in 1905 , Frank Epperson , aged 11 , left a bowl of sweet liquid with a stirring stick in it on his porch . It froze overnight . He had invented ice cream . 3 At a hotel in 1853 , a guest sent his potatoes back to the kitchen . He complained they were too soft . The angry cook , George Crum , cut more potatoes into very thin slices and fried them until they were crisp . These were the first potato chips . 4 One day in 1943 , Richard James , an American engineer , saw a spring falling off a shelf onto a table . The spring moved across the table and onto the floor . James developed the Slinky , a popular toy for children . 5 Charles Goodyear dropped some material onto a hot stove . When he scraped it off , he found the material was flexible and firm .
