In November 1947 , the UN General Assembly met in New York to decide whether to end British rule in Israel and divide the country into two separate states , Arab and Jewish . The Zionist leaders hoped that the UN General Assembly would approve this plan , known as the Partition Plan , and that finally an independent Jewish state would be established in the Land of Israel . They worked hard , trying to convince members of the UN to vote for this plan , and on November 29 , 1947 , the UN decided to establish a Jewish State in the Land of Israel . 2 The story of the ship Exodus became well known throughout the world and some claim that this influenced the decision of some of the representatives to the UN to vote for the Partition Plan in favor of the establishment of the State of Israel .
