magazines means that we see beautiful people all the time – in some cases , more often than members of our own families . This makes exceptional good looks seem normal , and anything less than perfection seem abnormal and ugly . It has been estimated that young women now see more images of exceptionally beautiful women in one day than their grandmothers could have seen during their entire teen years . Poor body image begins at a very early age . Humans begin to recognize themselves in mirrors at about two years of age . Female humans begin to dislike what they see only a few years later . Studies in Japan have found that 41 % of elementary school girls ( some as young as six ) thought they were too fat . Why are women so much more critical of their w appearance than men ? Because women are judged on their appearance more than men , and standards of female beauty are considerably higher and more inflexible . Also , most women are trying to achieve the impossible : standards of female beauty have become more and more unrealistic over the years . Forty years ago , top models and beauty queens weighed only 8 % less than the average woman ; now they weigh 23 % less . The current media ideal for women can be achieved by less than 5 % of the female population . The good news is that we do not have to accept society’s standards of beauty . Strong-minded individuals who reject current standards of beauty are more likely to have a positive body image . Moreover , exercise therapy has been found to be as effective as psychotherapy in treating serious body image disturbances . Generally , both men and women who participate in sport have a more positive body image than those who do not .
