FACE IT If you were a dog , a cat or a horse , you wouldn’t realize that your image in a mirror was a reflection of yourself . Animals in this situation might think they are face to face with another member of their species . The exception is the great apes ( chimps , gorillas and orangutans are able to recognize themselves in the mirror ) and , of course , us . What’s interesting is what apes do when presented with a mirror : they use it to groom themselves , pick food out of their teeth and make faces at themselves for entertainment – more or less the same reactions as us . But that’s where the similarity ends . Unlike animals , humans worry constantly about their appearance . This is not an indication of vanity , however . Vanity – excessive pride in one’s appearance – is generally seen as a negative quality . On the other hand , concern about one’s appearance is quite normal and understandable . In a society in which attractive people have definite advantages , it is not surprising that physical attractiveness is of great importance to us . Experiments show that we react more favorably to physically attractive people . Consider w the following : Attractive job applicants have a better chance of landing the job and of receiving a higher salary . One US study found that male executives earned about $ 600 more per inch of height than their shorter colleagues . In a court of law , attractive people are found guilty less often ; when they are found guilty , they receive lighter sentences . Concern with appearance is not just a feature of modern Western culture . Historians believe that every period of history must have had its own standards of beauty and every society its own ideal of how people should look . But although we resemble other cultures in our concern about appearance , there is a great difference in the degree of concern . Advances in technology – in particular the rise of the mass media – have caused normal concerns about our appearance to become obsessions . Constant exposure to TV , billboards and
