James Dean ( 1931-1955 ) Dean's brilliant acting career was cut short by his death in a car accident . Ironically , he had a passion for racing cars . The charismatic young actor made only three major films in his short career : Rebel without a Cause , Eastof Eden and Giant ( all released in 1955 and still screened today ) . He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor . Dean has become a symbol of teenage rebellion for American teenagers . Fifty years after his death , James Dean ' s image has been used to sell products such as jeans , watches and greeting cards . There is still a market for this rebel , who will stay young forever . Bette Davis ( 1908-1989 ) Davis has been called "The First Lady of the American Screen . " She was known for her strength and independence . Davis was a liberated woman in a business that was dominated by men . She was an extremely talented actress , who could play many difficult and powerful roles . Davis created a new standard for screen heroines — the strong and independent woman . Her film career spanned over 60 years ; Davis was nominated for 10 Best Actress Academy Awards , and won twice . Bette Davis made over 100 films and is known for such classics as All About Eve ( 1950 ) and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane ? ( 1962 ) . On her gravestone is written "She did it the hard way . " Mickey Mouse ( 1928- ) Mickey made his first screen appearance on November 18 , 1928 , starring in the first cartoon with sound , Steamboat Willie . He has since become Walt Disney's most famous " star , " and is known internationally . He has become the symbol of the Disney Company , and will be remembered as an icon * of the 20 century . * icon —a famous person or thing symbolizing a particular idea .
