When a statement is reported some time after speaking , certain changes are usually made . Example : Peter explained that he still had to get back to the office that night . ? The reporting verb is in the past : explains - >• explained ? Verbs in the reported statement are usually one tense further in the past than in the original statement : have - »• had ? Time and place words and phrases change : 3 Rewrite the statements in activity 2 in reported speech , as if the report were made some time after speaking . Make the necessary changes according to the information above . 4 Below are comments made by other people who were interviewed .
