A Moving Story Real estate developers often rebuild and renovate neighborhoods . Projects to " renew " old neighborhoods have positive and negative sides . Read the following letter written to the mayor of the city by Daniel , a young student who works with senior citizens . Find out what Doris Hansen ' s problem is and what action Daniel is requesting . 15 Pinewood Grove Harbor City 3 March 2003 Ms . D . Lightford City Hall Harbor City Dear Ms . Light ford , 1 am a high school student and a volunteer with the organization "Leadershi p Within . " Since last year , I have been in close contact with the residents of the Old Harbor area , many of whom are senior citizens . One of the residents , Ms . Doris Hansen , asked me to write to you about a proposed rent increase . Ms . Hansen has been living in the same building for 40 years . As you probably know , a real estate developer has bought the buildings in the area . He plans to renovate them and increase the rent . Ms . Hansen does not have the money to pay the rent increase . At her age , and after 40 years in the same building , she feels that she is too old to move to another neighborhood . She would not be happy in a new place . 1 have also spoken to the other tenants in her building and all of them have expressed similar feelings . They are too old to begin life in a new place , where all the people around them would be strangers . Forcing them to move would mean breaking up a close community , where the residents know one another very well . I appeal to you to do something about this problem . I am sure that City Hall can find a way of preventing the rent increase and allowing Ms . Hansen and the other tenants to remain in their homes .
