London Transportation in the 19 Century As the city of London grew and spread in the 1 800 s , the most efficient form of transportation was the omnibus . The omnibus was a horsedrawn carriage that picked up passengers along its route — much like buses of today . There were about 5 , 000 omnibuses in London around 1850 . The omnibus drivers , called cads , shouted out their destinations along the route . Their shouts , the trotting of horses and the rattling of the carriages made the London streets very noisy . 2 Look at the comic strip below , based on Dickens ' s humorous essay "Omnibuses — from Sketches by Boz , " which was published in 1834 .
