William Shakespeare ( 1564-1616 ) is considered the greatest English writer and playwright of all time . He grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon , but lived most of his life in London , where he worked as an actor , a writer and a stage director . He wrote over 38 plays , including Romeo and Juliet , Hamlet , Macbeth and Julius Caesar . He also wrote many poems . Shakespeare built and managed the Globe Theatre in London and was also one of its owners . The building was destroyed in 1644 , but rebuilt in the 1990 s in its original style . Today , plays are performed there as they were in Shakespeare's day . This has made the Globe a tourist attraction . Charles Dickens ( 1812-1870 ) is a well-known English author . When Dickens was only 12 , his father , who was a clerk , was put into prison because he owed money , and young Dickens was forced to work in a warehouse * to earn money . Memories of this difficult period in his life influenced writing . As an adult , Dickens worked as a reporter and a lawyer in the London courts of law , but he is best known for his novels , including Oliver Twist and David Copperfield . Arthur Conan Doyle ( 1859- 1930 ) was born in Edinburgh , Scotland and educated in England . He studied medicine and began his career working as a medical assistant . He also worked as a ship's doctor and traveled a lot . In 1882 , he settled down in Plymouth , in the south of England , and was a successful private doctor . During his leisure time , Conan Doyle began to write fiction . He created the characters of Sherlock Holmes , the famous detective , and Dr . Watson , his loyal assistant . _ Today , Baker Street , the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes , attracts tourists from around the world . Virginia Woolf ( 1882-1941 ) was a famous British novelist . She was also a critic and journalist and a leading member of the Bloomsbury Group . The Bloomsbury Group included writers , philosophers and political thinkers and often met at Virginia Woolfs home , located in Bloomsbury Square in London . She is famous for developing a new style of literary writing . * warehouse —a building where products are stored before they are sent to shops .
