Link to Language : Descriptive Writing Several techniques are used in the excerpts on pages 6 and 7 to describe the special atmosphere of each city . Study the explanations and examples of each technique . Then look at the excerpts again and , in your notebook , write more examples for each technique . ? Adjective + Noun One of the most common techniques used in descriptive writing is the use of adjectives that describe nouns . This technique creates an image , a picture in the mind , of what is being described . Examples : adj . n . fashionable shops adj . n . ornate architecture Imagery Imagery is a literary technique often used in descriptive writing , especially in poetry . It is based on various forms of comparison . Personification — giving human characteristics to objects , animals or places Example : Everything in this city ... whispers : "Look at how beautiful I am !" Simile — comparing one thing to another using "like" or "as " Example : This city is like a tropical paradise ... Metaphor — making a direct comparison without "like" or "as " Example : This huge city is always a hive of activity . .. Second Person The use of the second person , where the writer addresses the reader , is a technique that tries to bring the reader into the situation . This technique combines description and persuasion . It is used with a variety of grammatical structures . Examples : You can sit back lazily in a gondola . .. ( You + modal + verb ) The city will charm you with its ... romantic atmosphere . ( will verb + you ) Enjoy the long hours of daylight ... ( Imperative )
