etting to the Point The lead ofa news article gives the main information . There 3 ^ three styles of leads : ? Summary — one or two sentences summarizing all the main information . This is the most common opening for a news article . ? Quotation — the article begins with a quotation . This is used to grab the reader's attention . ? Suspense — rather than giving all the information right away , some facts 3 ^ omitted in order to get the reader to read the whole article . This is the least common news opening . 1 Look at the excerpts on page 7 and decide what style of lead was used in each . 2 Choose two of the leads and rewrite each in a different style . The lead of a news article usually answers the wh-questions : who , what , when , where and why Z Read the lead from a news article and answer the following questions in your notebook . Heavy rain flooded railroad tracks and major highways , stopping traffic for hours in New York City during Thursday morning ' s rush hour . & Who or what is the article about ? B > When did the event take place ? < Q Where did it happen ? fl Why did it take place ? 0 What style of lead is it ? Example : a .
