Focus on Literature : Narrative Writing A narrative is an account of specific events and experiences , and can be based on truth or fiction . Often the narrative is a form of "reminiscing" — recalling a specific experience or period of time that was significant to the narrator . Less specific details and descriptions are given and the focus is 0 / 7 the narrator's impressions and the events that were most meaningful . Since the first-person narrator tells the story in his / her own words , the point of view is always the narrator's . Consider the following questions in the context of "Lessons in Friendship . " 1 Does the reader know what any of the characters looked like ? What details does the narrator focus on ? Why ? 2 Does the narrator give details about the characteristics she didn't want other people to see ( the " real me" )? Explain your answer . 3 Why do you think the narrator chose not to explain exactly what mistakes she made that led to rumors and gossip ? In narrative texts , a free style of writing may be used in order to reflect the everyday thoughts and speech of the narrator . In order to emphasize that it really is the narrator telling the story , the writer may choose words or sentences that are not grammatically accurate or that use slang or expressions that are heard in everyday speech . This is called literary license . Writers ( unlike language learners ) are sometimes allowed to break the grammar rules ! Examplesof literary license in the story : "There's the people you've known forever . " There's instead of There are " ... Who like ... know you ... in this way . ..
