On August 16 , 1 997 , 50-year-old Almitra Von Wilcox began walking around the world . Her starting point was the small town of Augusta in western Australia . Her final destination is San Diego , California , scheduled for the year 2008 . One of Almitra ' s goals is to share her travel experiences with people all over the world . For this reason , she is publishing her travel log and photography on her web site , called The Photogypsy . To make this possible , Almitra pulls a trolley that carries a computer , a printer , photography equipment , a solar panel and five satellite connections . When asked why she decided to travel on foot , Almitra replied , "This mode of transportation will leave me the most open and accessible to meet people . I can't be involved with life through the windows of a moving vehicle . I have to breathe it , taste it and adjust to its subtle rhythms .
