The gerund or the infinitive ? These verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive without changing the meaning of the sentence : attempt begin continue hate like love prefer start can ' t bear not bother Some children love to read / reading comic books . Others prefer to spend / spending their time reading adventure stories . These verbs ^/ 7 be / ס // 0 ^/ ^ by a gerund or an infinitive . However , the meaning of the sentence changes . forget mean regret remember stop The athlete stopped to take a drink of water . stop + infinitive = to take a short break to do something The athlete stopped running after he injured his leg . stop + gerund = to stop what one is doing I remembered to take my key with me . remember + infinitive = at the time I remembered taking my key out of the lock . remember + gerund = afterwards thinking back 1 Look at the descriptions on page 5 again and find examples of gerunds and infinitives that follow the verbs like , love and prefer .
