Tina Cohen , Grade 9 ff , November 20 , 2003 Multivac comp letes the job of processing the Inf ormation and Whistler analyzes the results . What he discovers is unbelievable . The unbelievable discovery is that jokes were not made up by any man . Whistler ' s conclusion is that creatures f rom outer ace have sp created jokes and placed them in human minds as p art of an exp eriment . The extraterrestrial * creatures note p eople ' s reactions to the jokes and in this way they study human psychology . At the end of the story , we discover that Meyerhof has also asked Wiultivac another question : "What will happ en af ter p eople discover where jokes come from ? " Multivac s surprising answer is that the extraterrestrial p owers will stop giving jokes to humans and that the exp eriment will end . Suddenly Meyerhof is unable to think of a single joke and he realizes that this has happ ened . The story ends with Meyerhof , Whistler and Trask in a state of shock , knowing that the gif tof humor is gone f orever and that no man will ever laugh again . 2 P Thinking About What You Have Read 1 What is the source of jokes , in your opinion ? Discuss with a partner . 2 Read the following sentence taken from the story itself and explain why the extraterrestrials' experiment has to end . "Multivac states that , once even a single human discovers the truth ofthis incthod of psychological analysis of the human mind , it will become useless . .. to those extraterrestrial powers now using it .
