After You Read : Vocabulary When a verb is used with a preposition , it is called a phrasal verb . The phrasal verbs carry on and carry out have different prepositions and different meanings . Carry on means continue and carry out means do or fulfill . Examples : ... we are discovering many new and interesting places , and that helps us carry on . The sailors are often hungry and tired , but they must still carry out their duties .
