Sailors , merchants and missionaries all sailed with Magellan . Some of the merchants on Magellan's ships were probably like Antonio * . He wrote the following letters to his fiancee , Beatriz , back in Spain . 2 As you read the letters and the historical notes in the boxes , make a list of at least six facts about life on these early voyages of exploration . April 2 ' , 1520 Dearest 3 eatriz , It is six long months since I left you . It seems like forever ! There is nothing around us but sea as far as the eye can see . It is sometimes difficult to stay in contact with all the ships of our fleet . The only way we can pass on messages is by shouting to each other . Discipline on board is very strict and members of the 1 crew are punished if they break ^ 76 captain ' s rules . Last week , one of the sailors stole a dried fruit . He was t ^\ ed to the deck and lef t there until he almost died . Can you believe how cruel that is ? The most serious crime at sea is mutiny : not obeying the cap tain s orders . The punishment f or mutiny is death . Last December , we reached the Brazilian coast . I wanted to send you a letter f rom there , but I could not find a shi p that was sailing for Seville . Yesterday , we landed at the port of 5 t . Julian . We will stock up with new supplies before setting out again . I can finally send this letter to you with a ship that is leaving for Seville next week . The future is unknown , but I depend on our captain to keep us on the right route . I miss you so much . I hope it will not be too long before I see you again . Until then , I send you all my love , Antonio Who sailed with Magellan ? Many different people sailed with Magellan . Most were sailors . It was their job to clean the ship and do all the heavy work on board . Most of these sailors could not read or write and could not find any other work . There were also merchants who wanted to get spices and other goods in order to make their fortune . A few were Christian missionaries . St . Julian would later become Rio de Janeiro . Rio de Janeiro was Brazil's capital city from 1822 until 1960 . In that same year , Brasilia became the capital city . Rio de Janeiro is especially known for its carnival , a four-day celebration of singing , dancing and colorful street parades . St .
