Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh A Chinese Myth Emperor Hung Vuong and his daughter , Mi Nuong , lived in a palace between the mountains and the sea . Mi Nuong grew into a beautiful young woman and the emperor decided it was time for her to marry . One day , two handsome and powerful young men came to the emperor . One ofthem was Son Tinh , the Spirit ofthe Mountain , and the other was Thuy Tinh , the Spirit of the Sea . Son Tinh was gentle and quiet , while Thuy Tinh had a stormy temper . Son Tinh said : "I am the Spirit of the Mountain . I rule over all creatures and plants living on the mountains . I want to marry Mi Nuong . I promise to do everything in my power to make her happy . " Thuy Tinh said : "I am the Spirit ofthe Sea . I rule over all creatures living in the water . I own all the treasures under the sea . If Mi Nuong marries me , she will become the Queen ofthe Sea . " The emperor could not decide between the two men . So he said to them : "Whoever brings the wedding gifts first will marry Mi Nuong . " Son Tinh arrived at the palace first . He broughtjewels and baskets of fruits and flowers . The emperor decided that Mi Nuong should marry Son Tinh , so Mi Nuong went off with Son Tinh to his kingdom on the mountain . Not long after , Thuy Tinh came bringing jewels , pearls and baskets of sea food . Thuy Tinh became very angry when he heard that Mi Nuong had gone with Son Tinh . Thuy Tinh was so angry that he declared war on Son Tinh . He used his magic powers to bring heavy rains and strong winds from the sea to the land . The high waves flooded the land and destroyed thousands of trees and houses . However , Son Tinh made his own magic . He made the mountain higher as the water rose , so that Thuy Tinh could not reach Mi Nuong and take her away with him . The war between Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh lasted for days and many lives were lost , Nobody won the war and Thuy Tinh returned to the sea . However , he never forgot Mi Nuong . Each year . Thuy Tinh brings storms to the land and raises the water up to the top of the mountain where Son Tinh and Mi Nuong live .
